The Provence of the North

With Herbs all Over

lomLom is the heart of the Norwegian inland, and only a four hour drive from Oslo. This small community in the highlands of central Norway is sometimes referred to as the “Provence of the north”.

There are flowers and herbs growing everywhere. The nature is spectacular and enhanced by the many beautiful rustic farms of the area.

Ecological Farming
Andreas visits a local farm that cultivates the earth according to ecological principles. This may be unconventional today, but more and more young farmers are adopting this farming philosophy.

Drinking Traditions
Liquor and Beer, or Mead, represent Norway’s only drinking traditions. The climate is too cold for growing wine grapes. Andreas starts off this episode by making his special Home Made Schnapps. The basis for this drink is pure alcohol, but blended with some of the locally grown spices and herbs, it tastes great.

The Menu
Dill is one of Andreas’ favorite herbs. He never misses an opportunity to use dill in his creations. For the Dill Scented Chicken, the main course in this episode, he uses dill in several different ways and gives the chicken a real treatment. An assortment of root vegetables accompanies the chicken. And with the promise of Home-made Ice Cream with Thyme and Honey, based on products from the local farm, everything is set for a perfect dinner in the heartland of Norway.
